PRECON: Static Sucks; - Let's Move!! (requires workshop ticket)
Limited Capacity seats available

The number one problem with photographs is that they don't move. The greatest photographers instill a sense of movement in their pictures and it engenders a connection with the viewer. It may be an engaging pose and expression in a portrait, or it may be a picture of movement as the subject. In this class, you're going to learn to make pictures that move and depict movement. You'll have subjects that move, You'll have lights that move, and you'll move your camera to create truly dynamic pictures that will expand the pictures you can make during every situation. It will be your quest to make portraits, buildings, street photos that move. You'll learn to destroy static cling and make dynamic pictures in any situation.

This workshop is for confident beginners and intermediate/advanced photogs who know how to use their cameras but would like to add variety to their picture making. We'll use flash and tripods often. Bring your own tripod; if you have lights you can bring them, but we'll also have tools to share as well.

I usually book people for an hour-long headshot session, and they usually leave 15 minutes later with a picture they love. You can make portraits quickly and you can do your clients a good service and you can be more profitable with these principles. I can't wait to show you how this works.

1001 Reasons You Can Switch To Mirrorless
Limited Capacity seats available

I know you love the camera you have--or maybe you don't--but people talk about mirrorless cameras like they are the most magical thing since the Great Pyramids. Are they really that awesome? What are the concrete benefits? How can I possibly switch away from my DSLR with all these lenses? Is the image quality as good? Questions galore!!! In this class, we'll talk seriously about the reasons you might want to switch away from a DSLR, and we'll get some cameras in your hands so you can experience the differences and benefits and get a taste of what switching might feel like. Personally, it took me a few trials before I was convinced. Now, I wish I'd switched sooner, and I'll show you a lot of reasons why. I don't get a kickback, I'm just your buddy showing you the things I love and why I think you'd benefit, too.

The Science of Optics (sponsored by Tamron Lenses)
Limited Capacity seats available

A discussion on modern lens design. We’ll be talking about how the demands of digital changed photographic lens design and, further, how today’s high resolution sensors continue that paradigm shift. We’ll go over autofocus systems and their foibles, stabilization and its importance, how to read MTF charts at a glance (further enabling understanding such sites as DxO and Olaf) while also putting those charts in their place when considering a lens’s actual use in the real world. Bokeh, crop factor equivalence, transmission, rendering... the hope is that you’ll have a better understanding of lenses not just as angles of coverage and depth of field but also as crafted tools in and of themselves… and how that craft can affect the beginnings of your creative process, as well as the nuances of your final output.

Shoot your shot - Going against the grain
Limited Capacity seats available

This seminar is an anecdotal account of how industry trends began to
heavily influence my photography and how I rejected those trends to
pursue a style of photography that fell more in line with how I wanted
to capture images and tell my client's stories. This conscious decision
to delve into a darker and more dramatic style of photography changed
the kind of gear I brought on weddings and sessions and helped me hone
in a signature style that stood out from my marketplace and attracted
the kinds of clients that connected with the vision I had for their
photography needs. Attendees will learn why it's important to recognize
what is trending in your industry, why you should emulate and hone those
trends, and ultimately why you may pivot and go a different direction.

Editing tricks and tips.
Limited Capacity seats available

Throughout the presentation I will show some shortcuts, Photoshop tools you might not know about, and techniques I've discovered that bring images to life. I hold nothing back.
The finishing touches in your style is the editing you do to make an image your own. Making that wedding image a certain tone, bringing that cosplay image to life with a background, or making a simple image still scream ‘I did this’ even before the viewer sees your name on it. THAT is the finishing touches to make an image your own style.
This is the hardest part…how do you come up with your own unique style?
Your eye. Everything you’ve ever seen that you loved in art and images adds to your style. Yes, even your first kiss, a lost love, a new love…they all affect what your style will look like.
Your mind. You learn tools. You learn techniques. You learn how to make any look you can imagine.
Your style is already in you. I will explain how to bring it into the light.

Basic Studio Beauty-Portrait Lighting
In this class I'll be sharing the basic guidelines for creating classic beauty-portrait images. Too often setups can seem complicated or difficult, and I want to show you how simple it can be to create a standout image without frustration or unflattering lighting. You can expect to learn or get a refresher on light patterns, my thought process on lighting an image, and you'll also see a demo of me building several simple setups from scratch. I'm a hands-on/visual learner myself, so it's important to me to share my thought process from start to finish. That said, don't expect ratios and histogram readings because I am going to show you how I light by building and fine tuning. I look forward to sharing a little bit of the knowledge I've gained throughout the years.

The Power Of The Face
The human face carries the marks of life, is a roadmap to who we are, and helps identify us as an individual. Quite often though, we find our subjects hidden behind a "mask” of fear or insecurity. This can apply to a high school senior, a seasoned model, a businessman or even a celebrity. Take a journey as we explore the physical and psychological study on pulling back the multi-facet layers that are involved in identifying "markers" that will reveal your subject and help you create the most honest and accurate portraits of your subjects. We will review techniques beyond posing to help you further your skills as a photographer including non-verbal communication and behavioral profiling which can range from how your subject sits to how they hold their hands. This is the starting point of any great portrait. Also covered will be the study of your subject’s facial structure, identifying anatomical flaws and solving with corrective approaches for the ultimate portrait. Live demonstrations focus on the different qualities of light (including soft light, hard light, diffused light and subtractive light), that are instrumental in creating portraits specific to your subject’s needs.

The Zen of Lighting
The first step to your own style is lighting. Either natural or studio or both, how you light your subject is the beginning of how your images will look. Like a great stew, it takes a lot of wonderful ingredients to make it great. Lighting would be the meat. Getting that first step down is important. The magic come with getting it down YOUR way, for your style.
Since there isn’t a right way, but your way, how do you know what to do?
Learn how to reverse engineer lighting.
Reconfigure your imagination to think ‘lighting’.
